Medical conferences are back: Palliative care is the theme of the evening. First in Italy, ASST Rhodense department.
The cycle of medicine and wellness conferences Vivere in Salute, coordinated by Dr Sergio Felisi, reopened last Friday. Felisi was with the doctors of the ASST Rhodense and a luminary of resuscitation.
The first conference of the Living in Health cycle opened its doors in Corte Valenti in Garbagnate Milanese and highlighted the themes of the Pain Therapy structure of the ASST Rhodense, which is the best in Italy. Chronic pain affects 20% of the population.
Free conferences for everyone
The conferences are free of charge. Organized in the spaces granted by the Municipality thanks to an agreement between Dr Sergio Felisi and the management of the Garbagnate hospital. Present on the evening was Dr Furio Zucco, president of the Presenza Amica Association and former head of the Resuscitation of the ASST Rhodense.
Maria Carmen Toia, director of the Hospice and palliative care of Garbagnate and Carlo Angelini, chief of the Pain Therapy active in the Hub of the Lombardy Region, were together with him.
An overall vision of patient care
Topics addressed by doctors were about the end of life, a wide item discussed in politics. Dr Angelini specified that chronic pain is the one that does not go away and has been persistent for months: we treat only this and not pain in general, and we do it regardless of the branch of medicine in which our patient is – Angelini specified. There is much confusion between pain therapy and palliative care: only the last one deals with the end of life. It merits some words since it is a crucial care sector. In Italy, 20% of the Italian and European population has this problem.
A touch of pride
Furio Zucco recalled the merits of the Garbagnate Pain Therapy division, saying: We have been developing this sector for 47 years and were the first to do so in this city. TD is generally a branch that is not considered enough but is, instead, very important. The department treats when the signal that comes from the patient is the pain that does not go away, and we treat regardless of whether it is a joint, oncological, cardiac problem, due to ALS, or dementia”.
